Project thinking

From brief to working system

The decisions behind the interface matter as much as the final screen.

The brief: a retail store ready for its next stage

Fire Fireworks was running a retail store on OpenCart 3 with the Journal 3 theme. The rebuild needed to address two changes together: moving to OpenCart 4 and extending the business to an organised online wholesale channel. We shaped the new experience around the different needs of consumers and professional partners, retaining OpenCart as the commerce platform.

  • Migration from OpenCart 3 to OpenCart 4
  • Replacement of Journal 3 with a theme built for this project
  • Expansion from B2C retail to a combined B2C/B2B model

A bespoke visual identity for Fire Fireworks

The new theme gives the store a distinct identity through dark backgrounds, expressive typography, large imagery and clear actions. The homepage connects the brand presentation to event content, themed collections and the product catalogue. Visitors can begin with an occasion or go directly to the category they need.

  • Rotating homepage hero presentations
  • Dedicated collections for weddings and events
  • Visual stories with access to related video
  • Navigation and layouts that adapt to the screen size

Retail and wholesale with clear access rules

Wholesale has its own landing page within the same store, with separate entry points for partner registration and sign-in. Selecting the B2B Wholesale customer group reveals fields for the company name and VAT ID. Professional access is enabled after account review and approval, and account-specific prices are shown after sign-in. The public page explains that process before a prospective partner registers.

  • One storefront serving consumers and professionals
  • A dedicated wholesale partnership page
  • B2B registration with company information
  • Account approval before access to wholesale pricing

A catalogue that supports product discovery

Category pages combine introductory content with a structured product list. The aerial-fireworks catalogue, for example, provides category and availability filters, sorting controls and a products-per-page selector. Cards show imagery, product names, model codes and prices, while unavailable items are clearly identified before the visitor attempts an order.

  • Category and availability filters
  • Sorting by name, price or model code
  • Visible product codes and availability
  • Search, wishlists and relevant collections

A more complete product page

The product page brings together an image gallery, zoom, available video, description and essential product information. Visitors can check availability and model details before proceeding and find a direct route to the support team. Reviews and related products are part of the page structure. An age gate and cookie preferences are separate elements of the access experience.

  • Image gallery with zoom and video where available
  • Clear price and availability information
  • Description, product details and a review section
  • Direct access to support and related products

PageSpeed: 92/100 mobile, 96/100 desktop

The new implementation has recorded Google PageSpeed Insights Performance scores of 92/100 on mobile and 96/100 on desktop. Both fall within the green 90–100 range and provide a concrete performance reference for the project. These are scores from the recorded test and can vary by URL and test conditions; they are not overall SEO scores or a guarantee of identical performance on every visit.

  • Mobile: 92/100 in Performance
  • Desktop: 96/100 in Performance
  • Performance considered alongside the design and wholesale functionality
