The Greek “e-retail” action has closed and is no longer accepting applications.

The subsidy of up to €5,000 belonged to the completed 2021 “e-retail” action. It is not a permanent or currently available eShop subsidy. We retain this URL for its historical and research value, with verified facts and a prominent status notice.

What the “e-retail” action was

The “e-retail” action formed part of Greece’s 2014–2020 ESPA framework. It supported small and medium-sized retail businesses affected by pandemic restrictions, helping them create or upgrade an online store and continue selling digitally.

The official archived call now marks the programme explicitly as closed.

Which businesses it covered

The final call covered established and newly formed small, micro and medium-sized retail businesses with a physical shop. Conditions included an eligible retail activity code, interruption of physical-store operations, a turnover decrease and compliance with de minimis limits.

Those historical conditions cannot be transferred to a newer call. Every programme has its own guide, beneficiaries, business activity codes, dates and eligible costs.

What amounts and costs it covered

01 / NEW ESHOP

Up to €5,000

For equipment, software and services required to create and manage a new online store.

02 / UPGRADE

Up to €1,500

For upgrading an eShop that existed before 18 March 2020, subject to the call’s terms.

03 / APPLICATIONS

22 Feb–6 Apr 2021

The final submission period was limited and has long since ended.

What technical requirements applied to the eShop

The deliverable was more than a simple catalogue website. The official call required features including two-language operation, responsive/mobile design, a shopping cart, stock monitoring and secure online payments.

  • Those requirements belonged to that specific programme guide, not to every future funding call.
  • Accessibility must be defined by the active call and its contractual documents. See our accessible website development service.
  • The beneficiary remained responsible for documentation, deadlines and verification procedures.

Why the original article differed from the final call

The original Firstidea article was published in December 2020, while the measure was still a public announcement rather than a complete programme guide. The final action was later named “e-retail” and introduced precise conditions. The official archived documents now take precedence over early estimates and commentary.

Where to check for a current funding programme

For a dated status overview and a clear distinction between business eligibility and technical delivery, see our ESPA funding guide for eShops and websites.

Funding availability changes by region, sector, company size and date. The former “e-retail” action and the 2023–2024 SME Digital Transformation calls are closed to new applications.

A safer verification path
1. Search the official ESPA programmes for businesses using the relevant region, sector and status filters.
2. Read the active call, appendices, amendments and deadlines.
3. Confirm eligibility with a qualified funding adviser or accountant before committing expenditure.

How to prepare a future digital project properly

  1. Define the commercial requirement. Catalogue, B2C/B2B sales, ERP, inventory, payments, delivery rules and content must work as one system.
  2. Translate the call into technical scope. Record requirements, deliverables, tests and evidence.
  3. Separate essentials from options. Keep budget and schedule manageable.
  4. Plan beyond the funded delivery. Updates, hosting, support, SEO, content and daily operations continue after launch.

A grant does not replace eCommerce strategy

An eShop should make commercial sense without a subsidy. Margin, product data, service, logistics and customer acquisition determine whether it remains viable after the programme closes.

How Firstidea can help

We can translate the technical requirements of an active call into a clear scope, proposal, architecture, deliverables and technical evidence. We are not funding advisers and cannot guarantee eligibility, approval or payment.

If you have a specific active call, send us its guide and technical appendix so that we can assess the technical component.

Frequently asked questions

Is the €5,000 eShop subsidy still available?

No. The 2021 “e-retail” action has closed and no longer accepts applications.

Is there another eShop programme available today?

Calls are not permanent or equivalent to “e-retail”. Check the official programme database using region, sector and programme-status filters.

Who was eligible for the historical action?

Small and medium-sized retail businesses with a physical shop and the specific conditions in the final programme guide. Historical eligibility does not imply eligibility for a newer call.

Did it also fund an existing eShop upgrade?

Yes. The historical action allowed up to €1,500 for an eShop that existed before 18 March 2020, under its specific conditions.

Does Firstidea submit funding applications?

No. We handle the technical scope, implementation and agreed technical evidence. Applications and funding eligibility remain with the beneficiary and a qualified adviser.

Can I start an eShop before finding a grant?

Yes, when the project is commercially viable. If you plan to seek funding, first confirm the eligible-expenditure date and every condition in a genuinely active call.
