SEO builds on that clear information and a sound technical implementation. Visibility in search and successful purchases need separate checks.

Sources reviewed: 27 September 2026. Examples are illustrative and do not present measured client results.

Building an eCommerce website involves more than displaying a catalogue. On each product page, a customer decides whether to continue, compare elsewhere or ask for clarification. If they need to call about dimensions, compatibility or delivery, the page leaves important work to customer service. This guide applies to new stores and improvements to existing WooCommerce, OpenCart and custom websites.

1. Start with the decision the customer needs to make

Before changing the design, collect the questions your team receives about one product category. For shoes, these may concern fit and size exchanges. For spare parts, compatibility matters. For a lamp, customers may ask about dimensions, the bulb and cable length. One generic description cannot support all these decisions.

Start with a small selection of products that receive visits, repeated questions or have commercial importance. Record what shoppers already know, what they need to confirm and which information is missing. This creates specific tasks for content, photography or functionality, rather than an open-ended request to make the page look more modern.

2. Make essential purchase information easy to find

The title should identify the actual product and the attributes that distinguish it. Alongside the main photograph, show a clear price, actual availability, relevant options and a clear add-to-cart action. If selecting an option changes the price or delivery estimate, show that change before the customer proceeds.

On a phone, check how far someone must scroll to reach these details. A very tall image or decorative area can push essential information out of reach. The layout should make reading, choosing a variant and correcting mistakes straightforward, without overlays that cover the information people need.

FROM IMAGE TO DECISIONEach detail answers a question

The product page

Photo & dimensions

DESK LIGHTINGLuma
Adjustable head

Options & box contents

Stock & dispatch
A more informed choice

01Clear photography✓

02Useful specifications✓

03Actual availability✓

04Clear delivery✓

Illustrative example · not an actual product or a sales measurement

3. Write descriptions that answer specific questions

A statement such as “a quality product with a unique design” does not explain whether the item fits a particular need. Use a short introduction about its purpose, readable specifications and useful clarifications. Distinguish what is included in the box, what must be purchased separately and any relevant limitations.

Manufacturer specifications are the basis for accuracy. Keep correct technical terminology and add useful explanations in your own words. Replacing words with synonyms in a supplier description does not create meaningful value. If AI assists with writing, verify every dimension, material and claim: a tool cannot know facts you have not supplied.

4. Show the product, its scale and its options

The main image should make the item recognisable. Add other angles, close-up details and a scale or dimension image where useful. A short video makes sense when it demonstrates something that is difficult to explain in still images, such as assembly or operation.

Selecting a colour must select the corresponding image and stock record. Make unavailable sizes clear. Provide useful alternative text where appropriate and labels for colours so choices do not depend only on a coloured dot. Check that photographs load efficiently without making the page move unexpectedly.

5. Explain delivery, shipping costs and returns before the cart

Distinguish availability from dispatch time and estimated arrival. “Available from supplier” does not mean the item is in your warehouse. Provide information you can substantiate, linking to the full policy when conditions depend on destination, weight or shipping method.

If shipping is calculated after an address is entered, explain when the customer will see it. Do not imply free shipping when exceptions apply. Genuine reviews are useful when they relate to the specific product; invented stars are not a substitute. Returns and warranty information must match the policies the business actually follows.

6. Example: from a generic description to useful information

The following is a fictional desk-lamp example, not an actual product or a client result. Illustrative dimensions and other details demonstrate the difference in presentation. A real store must use verified product information.

Element

Before

After, using verified information

Title

Modern lamp

Luma desk lamp, 42 cm, E27 fitting

Description

Perfect for every space

Adjustable head and a 16 cm diameter base for use on a desk

In the box

Not stated

Lamp and 1.8 m cable; bulb sold separately

Photography

One generic image

Desk setting, base detail and dimension image

Delivery

Immediately available

Actual stock, dispatch time and how shipping costs are calculated

7. Organise SEO around the specific product

Give the page a descriptive title and main heading, including the name, model and relevant variant where needed. Its search description should reflect the content. Link the product to the correct category and, where helpful, a buying guide, compatible accessories or genuinely related products.

Variants and filters need consistent URL handling. Where several addresses show the same content, the developer should define the preferred URL. For temporarily unavailable products, retain useful information and relevant alternatives. Permanent discontinuation requires a separate decision for each situation rather than automatically deleting every page. Our technical SEO guide for eCommerce explains the wider structure.

8. Keep product information consistent across systems

Structured data describes the product to search engines in the page code. Google’s product documentation covers information including price, availability and variants. These details must agree with what customers see. Valid markup can support richer search appearances, but does not guarantee them.

Also check consistency with the product feed sent to Google Merchant Center and with the final purchase. An old price or a supposedly available variant that has sold out undermines trust. If information comes from a warehouse or supplier, define who maintains it and how errors are detected. Read our guide to connecting an eShop with ERP or XML.

9. Make the information useful for AI search too

Answer questions such as “who is this for?”, “what is it compatible with?” and “what is included?” clearly. Add useful images and verified details. Google’s current AI search guide emphasises helpful content and technical access. There is no special “AI schema” requirement or guarantee that a product will be recommended.

Our AI SEO and GEO guide explains access controls and measurement separately. Keep the product page written for the buyer: clear answers are useful in their own right, without filling the page with every possible variation of a question.

10. Measure what changes after the improvement

Record the date, the changes and a comparable baseline period. The GA4 eCommerce documentation describes events such as product views, additions to the cart and purchases. These need to be implemented and verified before they can support a meaningful comparison.

Review mobile and desktop separately, alongside traffic source, price and stock. More additions to the cart are not enough if cancellations or returns also increase. With low traffic, rates can vary substantially, so include customer questions and usability checks. Our guide to increasing eShop orders connects the product page with the rest of the purchase journey.

A short checklist before the page is ready

Can the visitor identify the exact product and selected variant?

Are photographs, dimensions and box contents accurate?

Do the page, warehouse and cart agree on price and stock?

Are delivery, shipping and returns explained without vague promises?

Can people select variants comfortably on a phone and with a keyboard?

Can a customer complete a real test order?

Have internal links and the recording of essential actions been checked?

Frequently asked questions about product pages

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How long should a product description be?

Long enough to answer the questions that matter. There is no ideal length for every product. Use a clear introduction, organised specifications and specific clarifications.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can I use the supplier’s description?

Yes, where you have permission and the details are accurate. Add useful information about choosing and buying from your store. Reusing common specifications does not automatically mean a Google penalty.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Do I need many product photographs?

You need the right views and details. Five similar images may be less useful than a clear product shot, a dimension image and a photograph showing the item in use.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What should happen when a product sells out?

Show its actual status and, where available, an expected return date or relevant alternatives. Never claim stock that does not exist. Permanent discontinuation requires a separate review of the page and its links.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Is installing an SEO plugin enough?

A plugin can help manage titles or structured data. It does not establish whether the photos are correct, the description explains the product or the purchase actually works.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
What is product schema in plain language?

It is organised information within the page code about the product and its offer. It must describe the real page accurately and does not secure a particular position in Google.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Does the whole store need rebuilding?

Better information and targeted changes to the shared product template are often enough. A full rebuild becomes relevant when broader operational or technical limits justify it.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Which products should I improve first?

Start with products receiving relevant visits, recurring questions or returns, and those important to the business. Include different product types to test the shared template.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
Can an improved page appear in AI answers?

Clear, accessible information creates a stronger foundation for discovery. Each system chooses which sources to use; a citation or recommendation cannot be guaranteed.

</details>

<details class="wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow">
How will I know whether the work helped?

Compare additions to the cart, completed purchases, questions and returns under comparable conditions. Account for changes in price, advertising, seasonality and stock before attributing the difference to the page.

</details>

Start with a representative product sample

Firstidea can review the information, layout, SEO and actual purchase flow for a sample of your catalogue. This separates content improvements from changes to the product template and issues with connected systems. Send us your store and the products you would like reviewed.

A practical guide to product pages that answer buyers’ questions: product photography, descriptions, variants, delivery, SEO and measuring the path to purchase.

Build clearer product pages with useful descriptions, photos, stock and delivery information.
